Happy new year to my lovely community.
I hope you were able to have as restful break as possible. For me it was lovely to down tools and have a change, but I’m not sure preventing fights between my two kids was the most restful but it certainly was a break!
I am back in your inboxes this month talking about the impact of change. In both my work within businesses and my private clients, change was a huge dominating theme for 2024. From an impact perspective but also around tools and techniques to support people to better ride the waves of change and grow their resilience.
Because the world is changing at a rate we’ve never experienced before and that rate of change is going to continue to grow. So you’ll probably see this become a foundation for lots of the topics and insights I will be sharing with you this year. .
Change is constant.
Research conducted by Accenture shows that the rate has steadily risen since 2019, by 183% from 2019-2023 and 33% alone from 2023- 2024.
As humans this can be hugely impactful to us. Because as a species we thrive on safety. To be in ever evolving, changing and uncertain environments can cause us to become stressed, overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious and in some cases can lead to burnout.
And change is having implications on workforces. We are seeing it across all industries in the organisations we are currently working with - Fin Tech’s, charities, universities, scale ups.
Because workforces of today are not equipped to thrive in this constant state of evolution.
The challenges we are seeing in organisations are often to do with communication and lacking leadership skills:
Communications that are convoluted and lack of clarity
Employees are not being given the clear information they need, or expectations in a timely manner.
Many senior teams are waiting to ‘get it right’ instead of openly and honestly sharing where things are at, where they are moving to and the unknowns
A lack of appreciation that everyone will be on different change curves and need different things
Leaders are lacking key skills, structures and processes to allow employees to feel a sense of safety and feel heard and listened to.
And what we can’t do is halt the rate of change, but we can create our own change toolkits that allow us and our teams to not just survive, but to thrive in this environment.
And this all starts with building our resilience. Resilience is a great muscle that allows us to weather any storms and bounce back quickly from any knock backs. And resilience starts with you and your wellbeing.
A tool that I’ve used with many organisations and individuals with great success is creating your own resilience toolkit to support your wellbeing during challenging times. This is a great exercise to do as with your team, but also equally as effective to do individually.
Think about when you operate at your best:
What are you doing on a daily basis?
A weekly basis?
Think about your habits, your mindset, your body, your confidence - and create a list of things that really help you to build your resilience and operate as the best version of yourself.
For me this is daily walks with my dog with no distractions or headphones. It’s using my oracle cards and tapping into my intuition. Working out at home. A deep tissue massage.
And once you have your list, stick it up somewhere you can see it. And schedule these things into your diary. Hopefully you will have easy things you can do daily, things you do weekly and then monthly.
